Inspiration
Listed below are sources of inspiration for me. They come by
various means--from pages in a book, to the kind words of a friend. I hope you
will enjoy them as much as I have.
The Inner Game of Music by Barry Green with Timothy Gallwey

This book opened up a whole new way of thinking about my instrument--a way I'd
never heard of before. The book doesn't attempt to improve performance per se,
rather it teaches a player how to uncover and remove obstacles that hinder
performance.
Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee

This book is a collection of thoughts and ideas compiled by Bruce's wife Linda
Lee shortly after his death. I have always considered Bruce to be a master of
his physical self, achieving heights that no one since has even come close to,
much less surpassed. The compilation contains quotes from the master himself
about how he trained his mind and body to adapt and react in an instant to his
surroundings. I have been able to employ almost all of his teachings to the
drum kit, since combat and music both rely heavily on one thing--interaction with
other living breathing humans within a continually changing set of
circumstances.
Chick Corea Akoustic Band Alive
This
exceptional live performance by Dave Weckl and the gang is available on video
tape or laserdisc and should be purchased immediately if it is not already
owned. Like Bruce Lee, Dave represents the culmination of the mind/body training
necessary to reach beyond normal limitations and continue to grow as a musician.
Also, Dave has been a friend of mine for some time now, and has been hugely
inspirational to me in many ways, including helping me free up my performance on
my instrument, enlightening me to some secrets of success in the music business,
and just being a friend when I needed one.
